Anyone that’s shared a pint with me over the last few years will have no doubt heard about my rant about Twitter and Youtube, their business practices and why I think they must hate money.
Youtube have been better about it lately – although the advertisements are getting to the point where it’s becoming a huge turn-off, and it’s just begging for a competitior to come in and do it better.
However I have to give credit where it’s due, as Youtube have some absolutely sick marketing going on at the moment which really impressed me.
The band “Heart” were coming to Kingston, Ontario(where I live) on Saturday, February 12th. My wife has never even heard of Heart – she hates pretty much anything to do with the 80s – so I logged onto Youtube to show her this song:

A classic, right?
However one thing I noticed was where it said the song title and the bands name, it also said “Playing at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ontario on Feb 12, 2011”.
Now I’m thinking – that’s neat. It lists their next tour date.
But it actually goes even further than that.
I sent it to my friend in Alberta to check out this marketing, and he sent me this screenshot:
See what it says at the bottom?
Look at that! It doesn’t just tell you their next concert date – it tells you the next time they will be at a location close to you!
This is absolutely sick geo-targeting. If you click on the link it takes you to a page with information about the concert, and links to buy tickets etc.
This is just yet another example of how huge geo-targeting can be, and with something like this – the possibilities are endless. If you run any sort of entertainment site, you really need to start thinking outside the box like this.
What amazes me is there is some affiliates out there that don’t do ANY sort of geo-targeting at all. Honestly, if there’s one thing you really need to do it’s geo-target. As someone who does it religiously on many of his sites, I can tell you that it will increase conversions by a large margin.
Also remember you can get a discount if you use coupon code DealerDan when buying the Epik Media Geo-IP Plugin.
Anyway, props to Youtube – very sick geo-targeting. Also a big screw you to John Wright of Gaming Affiliates Guide. I told him about this technique and he just responded “lol Heart”. They’re a classic band goddamnit!
